Aakash Chopra, a cricket expert, has provided his perspective on the selection controversy, with a particular emphasis on the retention of Naman Dhir and Shivam Dube’s persistent absence from the team. Chopra’s analysis underscores the tension between acknowledging current performance and creating space for seasoned players to return to the team.

Aakash Chopra believes that it would be unwise to rest Dhir due to his current form with the bat. Shivam Dube and not Dhir should replace Nitish Kumar Reddy in the starting lineup, according to the former India opener.

The blue team, led by Shreyas Iyer, will face off against New Zealand in India’s fourth Twenty20 International at Eden Park in Auckland on October 30. The series has been won by India after three consecutive victories. Consequently, the focus is now on the performance of middle-order batters who are competing for a limited number of positions in the starting lineup, as well as on selection tactics.

Dhir has consistently batted throughout the series. In the inaugural Twenty20 International, he scored 42 runs without being out from 15 deliveries; in the subsequent match, he scored 31 runs from 17 balls. His aggressive style has been a significant factor in India’s success, and Aakash Chopra’s evaluation of Dhir’s bowling abilities bolsters the case for his retention. The 26-year-old’s batting performance alone warrants his inclusion in the starting roster, despite the fact that he has only bowled one over in the first three games.

What are the reasons for selecting Shivam Dube?

Dube, who is 33 years old, has not participated in any of the three Twenty20 Internationals that have been conducted thus far. India has prioritized Nitish Kumar Reddy and Naman Dhir in the middle order, resulting in the veteran batsman being benched.

In July 2026, Dube was engaged in international cricket by representing India in the One-Day International (ODI) format in England. His contributions to the ICC T20 World Cup in 2024 and 2026 serve as a testament to the extensive experience he brings to the team.

A distinct hierarchy of selection considerations is evident in the position of Aakash Chopra.

Dube should replace Dhir in the starting lineup to replace Reddy, as his current performance does not justify a bench spot. The selection argument underscored the competitive nature of India’s middle order, in which numerous players are vying for opportunities in the T20I format.
