For the upcoming KFC BBL|16 season, Mustafizur Rahman has signed his first Big Bash League contract with the Melbourne Renegades. With 271 games played for the Tigers in all formats, the 31-year-old Bangladeshi pace bowler, also referred to as “The Fizz,” brings significant international experience to the team. The seasoned quick will bolster the Renegades’ bowling attack as they get ready for the summer campaign, as they currently hold 16 of their 18 roster spots.
Following Jason Behrendorff’s shoulder surgery, which will keep the fourth-highest wicket-taker in BBL history out of the KFC BBL|16, the signing addresses Melbourne’s pace depth. Mustafizur is one of the team’s foreign recruits, along with New Zealand spinner Michael Bracewell and England wicketkeeper-batter Jonny Bairstow.
He is only the third player from Bangladesh to play in the BBL, after Shakib Al Hasan, who previously played for the same Melbourne team, and Rishad Hossain, who is currently contracted to the Hobart Hurricanes. His arrival marks a significant milestone for Bangladeshi cricket in the league.
I am excited to play with the Melbourne Renegades in the BBL for the first time. The left-arm seamer Rahman was quoted by Cricket Australia as saying, “It will be special to play at the MCG and I’m excited to join my teammates and contribute to the team.”
Mustafizur Rahman’s experience and ability to take wickets would be a great asset to the team, according to Renegades head coach Luke Ronchi. We needed him to be able to take wickets in both the Powerplay and the final moments of our attack. “BBL fans adore players who can turn a game around in a single over, and Mustafizur Rahman is capable of doing just that. Ronchi remarked, “Our fans are going to love watching him bring the theater throughout the summer. Every ball has the potential to produce something special.”
Mustafizur Rahman’s domestic experience and T20 credentials
Throughout his 331 T20 appearances in various leagues, Mustafizur Rahman has taken 423 wickets at a strike rate of 16.9. He has taken 121 wickets in nine seasons in the Bangladesh Premier League. He has participated in eight Indian Premier League seasons since winning the championship in his rookie season with Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2016. He played in five T20 World Cup group matches in 2022 after first coming into contact with Australia during their two-Test home series in 2017.
When Mustafizur Rahman took three wickets for 27 runs in Mirpur in June to give Bangladesh an unbeatable 2-0 lead in their three-match ODI series against Australia, he showed off his capacity to win games under pressure. His ability to deliver pivotal moments when it counts most was demonstrated in this clinical performance, a trait the Renegades will look to utilize throughout the summer.

Mustafizur Rahman’s ILT20 obligations with Dubai Capitals will prevent him from playing in the Renegades’ season opener against Perth Scorchers in Chennai. After those commitments are fulfilled, he is anticipated to be eligible for selection, enabling him to participate in the remainder of the competition.
Michael Archer, Jonny Bairstow, Jason Behrendorff, Michael Bracewell, Josh Brown, Harry Dixon, Brendan Doggett, Sam Elliott, Jake Fraser-McGurk, Caleb Jewell, Ben Manenti, Ollie Peake, Mustafizur Rahman, Tom Rogers, Callum Stow, and Will Sutherland are among the players that the Melbourne team has put together.
